In short

  • The NFT-powered PC and Mac game, Blankos Block Party, will be released through the Epic Games Store.
  • The game has already amassed more than a million users ahead of Epic’s launch, according to publisher Mythical Games.

Blankos Block Party, a NFTA driven creation game that claims to have already amassed over a million total players, could soon be in front of many more players when it launches on the popular Epic Games Store.

Publisher Mythical Games broke the news midway through NFT NYC this week, although a timeline for the launch has yet to be announced. Gala Games, another publisher, claimed earlier this month that its Wild West-themed shooter GRIT would be Epic’s first NFT game to hit the market Later this year.

The Epic Games Store is a major platform for PC and Mac digital games, counting over 194 million users at the end of 2021. Epic Games, also publisher of the hit game Fortnite and creator of the widely used Unreal Engine software, was more open to blockchain-based games than the rival marketplace, Steam.

John Linden, CEO of Mythical Games, said Decrypt that he “has been working with Epic for months now” to bring NFT games to market. However, he added that this was the final step after years of conversations with Epic about NFT games.

“They kind of went back and forth with some of the skepticism and stuff, and rightly so,” Linden said. “There are a lot of early games that were very gamified economies, really, more than a game.”

Ethereumgame based Axie Infinity was the biggest success story in the NFT gaming space to date, generating over $4 billion in total NFT transaction volume. However, the Pokémon-inspired gameplay was considered superficial, and its play to win economy began to crumble late last yearsending token prizes down the drain.

Linden said Mythical Games, which was co-founded by former game industry executives from Activision, Oculus and EA, is focused on providing “safe NFT gaming” to the Epic Games Store. He added that the studio is more concerned with gameplay and fun experiences than token reward mechanics.

“It’s definitely a ‘game first’ type experience,” he said of Blankos Block Party, “and we’re thrilled to have it on the Epic Games Store.”

Blankos Block Party is an action game for PC and Mac that lets players co-create and interact in dynamic 3D environments. The game uses NFT collectibles to represent user-owned items, such as unique avatars, inspired by vinyl collectibles, and digital clothing. They can be resold through the Blankos Marketplace, or can be combined to form new NFTs.

An NFT is a blockchain token that conveys ownership of an item, such as digital video game products, artwork, and collectibles. Blankos is built on the mythical platform, which is a private and authorized blockchain based on EOSIO, or the same technology that powers the EOS Blockchain. Mythic created a bridge from its platform to Ethereum, the leading NFT ecosystem.

According to Linden, the Epic Games Store version of Blankos Block Party will be identical to the existing version, which is available through a downloadable launcher app on the game’s official website. Mythical said that Blankos has already registered over one million accounts registered users since its open beta launch in December 2020.

Blankos recently announced a new in-game collaboration with fashion brand Burberry, following the initial partnership last yearand the game also held NFT drops with musician Deadmau5 and The Marathon Clothing.

While the launch timing is still unclear, Linden said Mythical is planning a series of game updates for the launch of Blankos Block Party on the Epic Games Store. He added that Blankos will leave “this early access [phase] we’ve been in for a while” as it expands to Epic’s market.

Mythical Games is also working with the National Football League on NFL Rivals, a Officially licensed “play-and-own” NFT game. Just this week, the publisher also announced a pair of additional “play and win” titles – the racing game Nitro Nation – World Tour and the digital trading card game Epic Spell Wars: Magic Fight – which will be released in 2023.

The editor raised $150 million in Series C funding last November at a $1.25 billion valuation, with backers including Andreessen Horowitz, NBA legend Michael Jordan and the NFL’s 32 Equity investment arm. In January, the company acquired cloud streaming startup Polystream with an eye to the future metaverse apps.
