Inmate missing from Alabama, corrections officer in Indiana custody after pursuit

Alabama fugitive Casey White and corrections officer Vicky White are in custody following a pursuit in Indiana, and she is hospitalized after taking her own life, authorities said late Monday afternoon. .

The couple were taken into custody after their vehicle crashed in Evansville, ending a week and a half on the run, officials said.

U.S. Marshals told CNN Vicky White’s wound was a self-inflicted gunshot wound. His injuries are “very serious,” said Sheriff Dave Wedding of Vanderburgh County, home to Evansville.

She is in “a fairly serious condition”, he told reporters.

No law enforcement officers fired any shots, according to Sheriff Rick Singleton of Lauderdale County, Alabama, where the couple fled on April 29.

A public tip led to the capture and arrest, he said. The tip came Sunday night, Singleton said.

The pair were located at a hotel and then a vehicle chase ensued, he said.

Wedding said the duo were supposed to be in Evansville since May 3. “It’s hard to believe they’ve been here for so many days, but we’re lucky to have run into them today,” he said.

Singleton said the whites, who are unrelated but reportedly romantically involved, will be brought back to Alabama. Casey White faces murder charges.

“He’ll be in a cell all by himself,” Singleton said. “He will remain handcuffed and shackled while he is in this cell and if he wants to sue me for violating his civil rights, so be it. He will never come out of this prison again. I assure you that.

Singleton said: “I’ve always been waiting for this result. I knew we would catch them. It was just a matter of time.”

Most escapes from a county jail are spontaneous, he said. “This escape was obviously well planned and calculated,” Singleton said. “There was a lot of preparation. They had lots of resources, had money, had vehicles, had everything they needed to be successful, and that’s what made the week and a half so difficult. We were starting from zero, and not only that, we started – they were six hours ahead of us.

Earlier Monday, U.S. Marshals released photos of who they believe was Casey White, taken by a surveillance camera at an Evansville car wash.

It was the first time since escaping from a Lauderdale County detention center with Vicky White that he was reportedly seen.

Vicky White was not seen in the photos.

US Marshals have released photos of who they believe is fugitive Casey White at an Indiana car wash.

Investigators were notified late Sunday that a 2006 Ford F-150 was discovered at a car wash in Evansville, about 175 miles north of Williamson County, Tennessee, where the 2007 Ford Edge the couple was in had traveled was found abandoned.

The owner provided security camera footage, US Marshals said in a statement.

Marshals traveled to Indiana to follow up on the tip, the agency said.

The US Marshals Service said it believed the person in the photo was Casey White.

Casey White faces previous murder charges. A reward of up to $15,000 was offered for information leading to his capture and $10,000 for information leading to Vicky White’s capture.

In Alabama, new charges have been filed against Vicky White in connection with Casey White’s escape, the Lauderdale County Sheriff’s Department said.

The allegations stem from the fact that she used a pseudonym to purchase the vehicle used in the escape, a 2007 Ford Edge, officials said. The warrant shows that Vicky White was wanted for forgery and identity theft.

Vicky White, who was assistant director of Lauderdale County Corrections, took Casey White from the county jail on April 29, saying she was taking him for a mental health evaluation, which authorities later learned was ‘it had never been programmed. She then said she was going to get medical attention after dropping the inmate off because she was not feeling well.

Vicky White’s use of aliases may have complicated the search, Singleton said Monday.

“If she used her own identity, maybe that would allow us to find her fairly easily,” Singleton told CNN’s Bianna Golodryga. “We know she used a fake ID to buy a car here locally.”.

After the capture, Singleton said he hoped Vicky White survived.

“We wish Vicky no ill will, but she has some answers for us,” he said. “I have every confidence in (her). She had been an exemplary employee. I don’t know if we will ever know” what happened to change that.

Surveillance video footage of Vicky White taken before the getaway showed the level of preparation for the escape, Singleton said.

Investigators found footage of White shopping for men’s clothing at a department store and at an “adult store,” Singleton said, adding that she “obviously had a change of clothes” for the inmate.

“It just tells us that it was very well planned and calculated,” Singleton said. “Obviously she planned this escape well until a T.”

Investigators previously released video footage showing Vicky White at a Quality Inn in Florence, where she spent the night before the escape more than a week ago.

The patrol car that the officer and inmate took from the jail was found abandoned in a mall parking lot. Vicky White’s prison keys, radio and handcuffs were found inside. Authorities believe the couple left the parking lot in a different vehicle: Vicky White’s 2007 Ford SUV that she parked in the parking lot the night before.

The vehicle was spotted May 6 at a Tennessee tow lot. The car had been abandoned in the woods without any identifying information on the same day the duo escaped, indicating they had driven about two hours north from the Florence Jail in Williamson County, Tennessee.

Authorities believe the vehicle may have had mechanical issues that caused the crash in the area.

Vicky White, 56, and Casey White, 38, are not related. They have known each other for at least 2020 and have developed a romantic relationship, the sheriff told CNN earlier this week.

Prior to their disappearance, Vicky White announced her intention to retire and sold her home for well below market value.

She is no longer employed by the sheriff’s office, the office said, adding that April 29 was her last day on the job, her retirement papers were never finalized.

The couple may have been armed with weapons including an AR-15 rifle, handguns and a shotgun while missing, the US Marshals Service said.

The agency said Casey White threatened his ex-girlfriend and sister in 2015 if he ever went out, “he would kill them and he wanted the police to kill him”. Authorities warned the detainee’s “potential targets” and took steps to protect them, the Marshals Service said.

“He has issues that he’s on medication for, and when he’s not on his medication I’m told he can be extremely violent,” Singleton said.

A photo render from the US Marshals shows what Vicky White might look like with darker hair.

The service also posted several photos of Casey White and her tattoos as well as photo renders of what Vicky White, who was blonde when she disappeared, would look like with darker, shorter hair.
