Helio Castroneves eyes historic Indy 500 victory
The 47-year-old Brazilian has a chance to stand alone atop the Indy 500 win list. He tied AJ Foyt, Al Unser and Rick Mears in winning for the fourth time in 2021.
“Indianapolis, when I’m under the most pressure, it brings out the best in me,” Castroneves told IndyStar’s Nathan Brown ahead of the 2022 race.

Scott Dixon starts from pole position for the fifth time
The 2008 Indy 500 winner is this year’s favorite after his 4-lap run at 234.046 mph, the second-fastest qualifying effort in race history. His five pole starts are one behind the record set by Rick Mears.
The Dixon family cautiously celebrated the feat. Her race win came from pole, but Emma Davies Dixon knows going first doesn’t guarantee anything.
“I’m so excited, but I’m so competitive, which goes against me a lot because I take the losses and the pain that we’ve had in the 500m, and that feels personal to me,” Davies Dixon told IndyStar. “It’s horrible to be like this.”

NASCAR legend Jimmie Johnson is an Indy 500 rookie
The transition from stock cars to the IndyCar series hasn’t been easy for the four-time Brickyard 400 champion (the Cup Series race that was once contested at the IMS oval). Mainly because Johnson is relatively new to road and street courses.
But put him on an oval, and he’s very competitive. He qualified 12th for his first Indy 500.
“The energy here for qualifying, you can feel it rising, and that’s what I witnessed last year as a spectator and loved it,” Johnson said after qualifying. “And being involved here as a pilot is really cool.”
