“Hello! I’m Tomi Talabi (@TomiandRizzy) and I’m a co-founder of The Black Beauty Club and Senior Communications Executive on Pinterest. I’ve been very lucky to have reached a point in my career where I can combine my passions and try some positive Less than 2 years ago, I co-founded The Black Beauty Club, a community that focuses the black voice and builds on cultural experiences, creating space for enthusiasts, critics, founders and consumers to discuss, learn and build bridges.

During my tenure as Director of Global Communications and Influenza Relations at Bobbi Brown, I had several revelations that affected me personally and professionally. I have spoken to many beauty influencers to gain an overview of the influencers’ economy, but these interviews unexpectedly revealed a cultural view of beauty that had more to do with rituals, values and community than with products. I combined with this experience, more precisely “why” or “when” we do what we do in the field of beauty, and it began to ground my connection with the experience of beauty. For example, all over the world, we have lined our eyes with Kohl; in Nigeria and Ghana, you see little boys and girls heavily lined up to protect their eyes from the sun. If you talk to someone in Afghanistan, they will share a similar ritual about Kohl. I found it very fascinating to hear similar cultural stories from other parts of the world. I began to realize that I was not a product girl and a lot of people weren’t.

My appreciation of beauty comes from everyone around me. I spent my first 10 years in Lagos, during the country’s prosperous economic peak. Nigerian women have been financially strengthened and this has affected their appearance and their fashion choices. Everything was bold, golden and maximalist. Even at a young age, I don’t know why, but even though I was never interested in wearing red lipstick, I just enjoyed seeing my mom, her cousins, and her friends dazzle. I have also been very influenced by the men in my life and their caring aesthetics from fading to fres and even their acceptance of British trends such as cutting eyebrows. I also grew up on old Bollywood movies, older than me, with a different set of beauty standards. Old Bollywood loved sensual women, there were also many beautifying ornaments such as bracelets, ankles and nose rings that were very similar to Muslim women in northern Nigeria. I sincerely love cultural connections.

My skin care routine must maintain an atmosphere of least stress.

The night before bed I wash my face Klur Gentle Matter Cleanser, it is gentle, effective and moisturizing, so it does not dry out the face. If I have makeup, I use Allies of Skin Molecular Skin Amino Hydrating Cleanser, it has moring oil and gently removes spf and makeup without undressing the skin. I use Epi.Logic Even Balance Toner to keep my face supple and hydrated. I love Vintner’s Daughter and I use both the Treatment Essence and the Active Serum, it immediately brightens and soothes my skin, but the real results do not come until the next morning. I add Klur immersion serum for hydration and subsequent Le Prunier Plum Oil to lock in moisture. If I feel dehydrated or need extra moisture, I will add Epara Night Balm to provide hydration. This is my version of slugging. The real results are visible the next day, so my morning routine is easy.

In the morning I wash my face with water, if I don’t have a morning run, then I use Klur Gentle mat again. I spray my face with the best Rosen Rose Water Face Dew, apply a little moisturizing face cream from Epar and SuperGoop Daily Dose Sunscreen for full shine. Easy!

My makeup routine is a lot on the go. The Bobbi Brown Skin Long Wear Weight Foundation is one of the best, even Jackie Aina said the world sleeps on it, and I agree. I mix SLWWFoundation with Saie Glow Super Gel and rub it in my hands and then rub my face with my palms. If necessary, I will use a brush to grind it properly. Then I dust my face with Danessa Myricks Beauty Evolution Powder in Invisible 01, so there is no transmission and everything stays in place. This was a recommendation from phenomenal makeup and body art artist Mikely Wariebi. She painted Beyonce, so that’s all I need. My favorite blush is Lys Beauty Satin Matte Cream Blush, it is dewy and looks great on almost all skin tones. I have my eyebrows dyed with Lenox in Harlem for $ 20 because I don’t bother doing them daily and they look incredible. I have very sensitive eyes, so I usually use Kulfi Beauty Kajal Eyeliner eyeliner. These eyeliner is very soft, easy to use and my favorite shade is Rain Check, which I sometimes use as a shadow. I wasn’t blessed with long lashes, so I switched between Pat Mcgrath Fetish Eyes and Too Faced Better Than Sex Mascara. Always put Ami Cole Lip Oil on my lips and then add Rosen Rose Water Face Dew.

My body care routine is probably my favorite. I shower at least twice a day with my sponge and Redoux Botanical Bar, which is such an important part of my routine. Cleaning is an important part of taking care of yourself, it is a luxury that is very easy and often taken for granted. After the shower, when I’m in the bath, I apply Element of Comfort body oil from Klur to lock in hydration. Then I apply Advanced Repair body cream from Eucerin because I am afraid I will be ashen in life. In the summer I will switch to something lighter like Eucerin Original. I’m obsessed with SKN / MUSE Devine Oil, it smells great and before I put on my clothes or pajamas, I rub it all over my chest and arms. People stop me for Devine Oil.

I have been going to the same hairdresser for 20 years, and when she goes to Africa for 3 months without informing me, I got a smirk. My hair will almost always be tangled in braids or curls. This is how I was raised and this is how my mother and her mother were raised. When it wasn’t in braids and cornrows, they had short afro. I won’t feel bad that I can’t decide to “wash and go” or that I’m too lazy to braid or curl my hair every night. I started making my own fragrant hair oils for my son and I also started playing shampooing. These days, I use my own oil mixture and Sunday 2 Sunday edge Bloomish serum daily. I wash and condition my hair with LivSo products, which were amazing.

At this stage in my life, I decompress and keep running. I started running at the beginning of a pandemic at the suggestion of my therapist. As a mom, businesswoman and technology manager, multitasking is the order of the day, and working from home doesn’t always make home feel safe. The morning run is a great escape, it is great for mental and physical well-being. I feel great physically and my skin looks great. My mind is clear because I thought things through and I also spoke them out loud. Before I finish my 3 miles, I’m ready for anything, because I’ve already done the most difficult. In fact, I feel liberated.

In the evening, I try to take sleep hygiene and routine seriously. I start running at 20:30. I’m known to take a shower every night before going to bed. I won’t sleep without a shower, it’s an African custom from childhood. I am doing my fifth prayer of the day. Complete your evening skin care and try to sleep 7-8 hours. Sleep is part of my routine and skin care. Once or twice a week, I finish everything early and go to bed at 8 p.m. ”
