Do bras really prevent slackening?

There is no such thing as taking off a bra at the end of the day, but since homeowners have evolved to work remotely, more and more women are putting comfort first, which means that our bras stay in the back of the drawers. But do bras really prevent breasts from loosening? Plastic surgeons are asked whether it is recommended to keep bras in stock or whether we should not dust them.

Gravity code

“Gravity is our enemy of aging in general, but especially in the breasts,” says New York plastic surgeon B. Aviva Preminger, MD. “The breasts carry a certain weight and without support, the tissue can stretch over time.” For this reason, Dr. Preminger is wrong on the side of caution when it comes to crossing without a bra. “A lot of my breast augmentation patients like to go without bras, but I warn them to do it all the time so they don’t fall.”

“Bras are useful in preventing premature onset, especially in women with breast implants and larger breasts,” adds Troy, plastic surgeon Anthony Youn, MD, who adds that they should be worn daily to be energetic. However, he adds that it is perfectly fine to take off the bra after a long day. “I don’t think it’s necessary to sleep in a bra unless you’re a few weeks after surgery. Otherwise, rest and sleep where you feel most comfortable. ”

Support system

While Dr. Preminger and Dr. Youn believes that bras prevent breast drop over time, Grand Rapids, MI plastic surgeon Bradley Bengtson, MD says he does not believe that external support power supports breast tissue and prevents skin tightening over time. “I believe that ptosis or breast loss is caused by the weight of the breasts over time on the soft tissues, ”he says. “Patients with poor genetics or significant weight loss have more elastic skin and can handle smaller breast volumes.” In addition, he says that patients with small breasts may have a decline “because of breastfeeding and gradual slow progressive stretching and faster blowing, as we see in pregnancy or tummy after pregnancy. The skin rarely returns to normal. Most of it is things we can’t control. ”

A 15-year study conducted by a professor at the University of Besancon found that “from a medical, physiological and anatomical point of view, breasts have no benefit from denying gravity.” The study concluded that in the absence of a bra, women are forced to have better posture and develop the muscles that lie under their breasts. It was also found that women who wore bras each year had nipples on average seven millimeters higher than their shoulders than regular bra wearers. The study showed that wearing a tight bra also restricted lymphatic and blood flow, which affected circulation.

However, Dr. Bengston recommends wearing a bra when you are engaged in constant, high-impact activities. “I have my patients who wear great support bras, such as SheFit sports bras when exercising or making a big impact,” he says.

Surgical solution

It is known that wearing a bra can be uncomfortable. “My breast-shrinking patients often complain of shoulder discomfort because of the bra straps because their bras lift so many heavy loads,” says Dr. Preminger. “The best solution for this is not to do without a bra, but to have your breasts shrunk.”
